Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales makes a sudden arrival on iOS

A meaty Witcher adventure from CD Projekt Red

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales has very suddenly arrived on the App Store today. This one first launched for PC back in 2018, where it earned generally glowing reviews for its sweeping fantasy yarn and interesting mix of exploration and card battles.

I played it when it eventually made the move to consoles, and while the performance wasn’t pretty at launch, the game itself ranks among the studio’s best. You’ll venture through the Northern Realms as Queen Meve, watching her build up her army and work to reclaim her role as ruler of Rivia and Lyria in the face of a violent Nilfgaardian invasion.

The gameplay mixes basic exploration of semi-open areas with intense, strategic card battles that initially feel somewhat similar to Gwent, which itself started life as a mini-game within The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Tons of changes have been made to the core card action, however, and a good deal of the battles function more like puzzles than anything else.

The story and characters are arguably the real draw here, with Meve meeting and befriending an excellent supporting cast throughout her lengthy quest. And the decisions she makes along the way will often have both long-term and more immediate consequences – so be wary.

The iOS port introduces dedicated touchscreen controls designed for on-the-go-play, as well as support for cloud saves, meaning you can easily switch between playing on PC and mobile. Playing Thronebreaker will net you neat rewards within Gwent, some of which include unique tournaments and 20 cards for multiplayer battles.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is now available for download as a premium game priced at $9.99 from over on the App Store. Its arrival today is a wonderful surprise, though here’s to hoping that the performance is halfway decent.
